Our History

The history of Pleasant Valley Church is one of steady upgrades, as our ministry has been equipped both with dedicated pastors and faithful parishioners.

Several German Lutheran families settled in the Pleasant Valley area and founded Immanuel Lutheran Church in 1874. Pastors from neighboring congregations served the church until 1882 when the first resident pastor, the Rev. P. Rupprecht, served the congregation.

The first church building was built in 1877 -- the lower floor was a meeting place for worship services and Sunday school, while the second story served as an overnight dwelling for the visiting pastors. A resolution to build a new church was adopted on January 2, 1896. The cost of the building was $1950. The bell, weighing about 1500 pounds, was purchased for $250. The cornerstone was laid on May 10, 1896.

The parsonage was built in 1909 at a cost of $1500. In 1936 the church was raised to build a full basement beneath it.

In 1945, the members of St. John's Lutheran Church of Sargeant asked the pastor of Immanuel to serve their congregation as well. The church has been a joint parish ever since.

Between 1956 - 1963, ten stained glass windows were installed. In 1956, a new kitchen and restroom were added to the basement. The church entry and wheelchair lift were added in 1983.

In 2000, the parsonage kitchen was remodeled and a small addition (back entry, bathroom, laundry room and deck) was built. Steel shingles were installed on both the church and parsonage in 2010.

The parsonage underwent significant upgrades again in the summer of 2014 with paint, flooring, and cabinetry. In 2015, the church was fitted with a new keyboard and sound system.
